About Building Craft Lab

Building Craft Lab is an online collaborative platform to explore the world of Craft and Built Environment. Its vision is to generate, amalgamate, catalogue and disseminate resources related to Indian Crafts and Traditional and Vernacular Built Habitat.

The idea of the lab is result of many discussions and interactions between the researchers of Design Innovation and Craft Resource Centre (DICRC), CEPT University along with various experts, academicians, professionals, technologist, entrepreneurs related to the field of craft, built environment and digital technology.It has four components - Map, Catalogue, Directory, and Documentation. Map acts not only as location search but also a geo-spatial analytical tool.

Catalogue will have images of various building, interior architecture elements, furniture, craft objects. Directory will have information and showcase of craftspeople, craft designer, makers, craft entrepreneurs and all those associated to crafts. Documentation section will have various educational resources related to the allied field of crafts from drawings to documents to videos to interactive resources. The data will be generated and shared by various Institutions, Craft Organisations, NGOs, Government Bodies, Craft and Design Enterprises as well as individuals like Scholars, Researchers, Academicians, Craft Designers, Artisans and Professionals.

This data will act as a valuable resource to various students, craftspeople, educators, design professionals, architects, interior designers, researchers, government employees, conservationist, and all those related to the field of Art, Craft, Design and Architecture.

Map

Map constitutes of three major components: Building Map, Craft Map and Analytics. The data on the map is collected through Mobile Application Form using a tablet or a mobile phone. This data is linked to the Catalogue section of the Lab. Map also provides the facility of generating a query and uses certain parameters for filtering the search.

Building Map

The Building Map provides the geographical locations to all the mapped Traditional and Vernacular Buildings, their Elements (Interior Architecture elements, Furniture, Objects and Accessories) as well as the Space Making Crafts (SMC) and Surface Narrative Crafts (SNC) integrated within it; spread across India.

The Map is segregated into two major categories, Buildings and Elements, using which the user can manoeuvre through the map. The search query generators range from different types of Interior Architecture Elements and Furniture to the type of buildings to the craft objects, materials and crafts techniques involved. All the mapped data is represented through icons, which on clicking display Information Card of each.

Craft Map

The Craft Map provides the geographical locations to all the mapped Craftspeople and Craft Enterprises spread across India. The Map is segregated into two major categories, People and Enterprises, using which the user can oscillate through the map

The search query generators range from different types of materials, crafts techniques, gender, type of work, position, knowledge sources, etc. All the mapped data is represented through icons, which on clicking display Information Card of each.

Analytics

It is a section where the data will be analysed using various statistical analysis and other informational techniques employing various parameters to discover and communicate meaningful patterns in data. These will be represented through maps, diagrams, charts, 3D views and their associated tabular datasets.

Catalogue

Catalogue is a comprehensive collection of images and associated data about Building, Interior Architecture Elements, Furniture and Objects related to Crafts and Traditional and Vernacular Built Environment. This set of data is procured employing the Mapping Process through Mobile Application Form using a tablet or a mobile phone. This data is linked to the Map section of the Lab.

The data is organised using various parameters like type, material, region, craft techniques, source, etc. These parameters acts a base to generate a query and filter the search. Building Section contains the data related to the traditional and vernacular buildings of India which may be residential, commercial or religions in nature.

The Interior Architecture Elements Section contains data regarding all the elements and components of a building like Column, Door, Window, Staircase, Bracket, Balcony, Parapet, Beam, Floor, Wall, Ceiling, Jharokha, Entablature and Railing

The Furniture Section encompasses all the furniture types like Table, In-built Storage,Movable Storage, Chair, Bed, Stool, Sofa, Partition, Swing, etc. Object Section contains the information related to Artefacts, Hardware, Frame, Light Fixtures, etc

Directory

The Directory provides a comprehensive data about the Craftspeople, Craft Designer, Craft Entrepreneur as well as Craft Enterprises and Craft-Design Firms ranging from the contact details, type of work, craft process, knowledge resources, types of craft applications and products

The information about the people and enterprises is collected from the field through the process of Craft Mapping using Mobile Application Form. The directory also showcases the Craft Products. The directory is in the public domain hence allowing the larger society to know about the crafts and craftspeople. This in turn will generate value for craft sector and livelihood for the craftspeople in longer run.

Documentation

The Documentation Section has got 3 sub sections - Drawings, Documents and Videos. The Drawing Section refers to Visual Material like technical drawings, field drawings, diagrams, illustrations, etc related to Traditional and Vernacular Buildings as well as craft objects of India.

This visual material is the record of the indigenous knowledge embedded in the heritage building and craft products. Documents refers to various types of Book, Booklets, Data Files, Design Kit, Diary, Field Data, Journal Article, Magazine Article, Manual, Newsletter, Panels, Paper, Plates, Portfolio, Presentation, Reports, Theses, etc related to the Craft and Heritage Built Environment. Video constitutes of various films, documentaries, moving image related to field of Craft, Art, Design and Architecture.
